Bezos is one of the 50 Americans who gave the most to charity in 2020, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropys annual rankings. “There has been change building among private donors.”All told, the 50 biggest donors contributed $24.7 billion in 2020, compared with $15.8 billion in 2019. The $1 billion-plus of giving by each of the top five on the Philanthropy 50 matches last year’s record. No more than three donors gave $1 billion or more in any of the previous years. Colleges and universities received $2.2 billion from Philanthropy 50 donors in 2020.

Whats News Today: Drive-in movie, softball

The Williamson Road Area Business Association will hold a pop-up Community Drive-in tonight. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. with the movie starting at dusk. Feeding Southwest Virginia and Convoy of Hope are teaming up to make sure people in the Highlands have the food they need. Feeding Southwest Virginia will provide fresh produce. Feeding America designated Clifton Forge a high need area, which allows Feeding Southwest to use the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program to help out.

Politicians pack meals for Feeding America Southwest Virginia

SALEM, Va. - Several elected officials rolled up their sleeves to help Feeding America with its mission Friday morning. Delegate Sam Rasoul (D-Roanoke), Roanoke City Councilwoman Anita Price and Clifton Forge Mayor Jeff Irvine joined Feeding America Southwest Virginia volunteers to sort through the organization's pantry and pack boxes of food. Rasoul and Price said they want to do what they can to end hunger in the commonwealth. "There is nothing worse than a child coming into a classroom and trying to think on an empty stomach," added Price. Mark Warner (D-VA) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) also assisted Feeding America Southwest Virginia during the event.
