The Fagradals Mountain volcano had been dormant for 6,000 years, and the Reykjanes Peninsula hadn't seen an eruption of any volcano in 781 years. But volcanologists were still taken by surprise because the seismic activity had calmed down before the eruption.

The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world:___The qualifying match between host Iceland and Italy in the Under-21 European Championship has been postponed because of positive COVID-19 tests among the traveling team. The Italian delegation has been put in quarantine by Icelandic health authorities. The Italian soccer federation says โtwo players and member of staff of the under-21 side tested positive for COVID-19 after a swab test undertaken upon arrival at the airport.โIt was unclear when UEFA could reschedule the game. Italy is second and Iceland third in the group after six matches. It is split between a group stage in March and knockout rounds starting in May.

Iceland Mourns Glacier Killed by Climate Change With 'Letter to the Future'
Mourners gathered Sunday in Iceland for a memorial service for a glacier. The Okjokull glacier officially "died" in 2014, but Iceland's Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir and Environment Minister Gudmundur Gudbrandsson paid tribute to it over the weekend with the special service. There, a memorial plaque was drilled into a rock, honoring it as the first glacier lost to climate change. Iceland is home to over 200 glaciers, including Europe's largest. But at the present rate of decline, all of Iceland's glaciers will be gone within 200 years.
