NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill is resigning after 3-year tenure
(CNN) - New York Police Department Commissioner James O'Neill is resigning from his post atop the country's largest police force and will take a job in the private sector, he said on Monday. NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea, who has been on the force for 28 years, will replace O'Neill, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. He previously served as NYPD Chief of Department and has worked as a police officer in New York City since 1983, according to his NYPD bio. The New York City Police Benevolent Association, the union representing NYPD officers, slammed the firing and unanimously approved a resolution of no confidence in him. O'Neill moved away from stop-and-friskDuring O'Neill's tenure, the NYPD moved away from the aggressive "stop-and-frisk" policy of former mayors Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg.
NYPD officer shot, suspect dead in confrontation, police say
WABC via CNN(CNN) - A man is dead and a New York City police officer is recovering after being shot in his bullet-proof vest following a violent struggle in the middle of the night, the NYPD commissioner said Wednesday morning. When officers fanned out at the building on Frederick Douglas Boulevard in the Harlem section of Manhattan, one officer encountered the 29-year-old suspect, naked, pointing a 9mm semiautomatic pistol at him. The officer yelled for help, and other officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect several times. "This is the type of call NYPD cops respond to thousands of times a year," O'Neill told reporters at an early morning news conference at St. Luke's Medical Center, where the officer is recovering. O'Neill displayed the officer's vest, showing reporters a bullet hole in the right-hand breast pocket.
Number of NYPD officer suicides this year rises to 10
WABC via CNN(CNN) - An off-duty New York Police Department sergeant has died by suicide, becoming the 10th NYPD member to do so this year, an NYPD representative said Wednesday. The sergeant, found in his residence, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the representative said. Of the 10 NYPD officer suicides in 2019, eight have happened since June. The cluster rattled the department, with leaders trying to come up with a way to tell the rank and file that it's OK to ask for help. Over the past five years, the NYPD has averaged between four and five suicides a year, Police Commissioner James O'Neill said in June at a news conference called after the department surpassed its average.
NYPD officer killed in the Bronx died by friendly fire, police say
WABC via CNNNEW YORK (CNN) - Police say the fatal shooting of a New York Police Department officer was the result of friendly fire. Mulkeen's partners fired 10 rounds, two of which struck officer Mulkeen, O'Neill said. Mulkeen had served on the NYPD for over six and a half years and lived in Yorktown Heights with his girlfriend, who is also an NYPD officer. Second friendly-fire death this year for NYPDMulkeen is the second NYPD officer to be shot and killed on the street this year. In addition, nine NYPD officers have died by suicide this year, a cluster that has rattled the department.
NYPD officer shot dead on duty in the Bronx

Brian Mulkeen, 33, served for nearly seven years and was killed on the job. "There is no worse a moment in our profession than this. Please keep Brian's family & colleagues in your thoughts," NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill tweeted. The killing comes more than a day after a gunman shot dead Texas Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal, an observant Sikh who gained national attention years ago when he got permission to wear a turban as part of his Harris County Sheriff's Office uniform.
NYPD commissioner won't resign after union resolutions of no confidence

Earlier this week, the PBA unanimously approved resolutions of no confidence in both O'Neill and Mayor Bill de Blasio. The union's 27-member delegate assembly released the resolutions on Wednesday, calling for O'Neill's resignation and asking Gov. PBA spokesman Albert O'Leary told CNN this is not the first time the union has issued a resolution of no confidence. He said the last one was against former NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly in 2004.
Officer accused of choking Eric Garner is fired
(CNN) - The New York police officer accused of fatally choking Eric Garner in 2014 has been fired and will not receive his NYPD pension, Commissioner James O'Neill said Monday. "It is clear that Daniel Pantaleo can no longer effectively serve as a New York City Police officer," he said. As Pantaleo forces Garner's head into the sidewalk, Garner could be heard saying "I can't breathe. Garner's death, three weeks before the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, started the resurgence of police accountability and brought the Black Lives Matter movement to the forefront, Rev. "For over five years, the Garner family and communities across the country have waited for justice in the death of Eric Garner," New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement.
Suicides push NYPD officials to get officers to seek help
New York Police Department officials went to his home, where they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The number of NYPD suicides so far this year stands at seven -- with five of those occurring since June. In 2017, there were at least 103 firefighter suicides and 140 police officer suicides compared with 93 firefighters and 129 police officers who died in the line of duty, the study found. POPPA volunteers deploy to each precinct or command affected by an officer's suicide. Since the suicides this summer, the NYPD has been developing a plan to help troubled officers.
NYPD judge recommends officer accused in Eric Garner case be fired
Cleared in a criminal trial, NYPD Officer Daniel Panaleo now faces an internal trial on tactics he used in the death of Eric Garner. A key question in the case remains whether Pantaleo used a chokehold, which is banned by the NYPD, against Garner. The officer denies he used the maneuver and has been on desk duty since Garner's death. "All of New York City understandably seeks closure to this difficult chapter in our City's history," Walzak said in a statement, declining further comment. Federal investigators began examining the circumstances of Garner's death in 2014, after a grand jury in New York declined to indict the Staten Island officer.

More than 100 law enforcement officers in the United States have taken their own lives in 2019, Chief of Department Terence Monahan said in June. But there are several barriers preventing first responders from accessing mental health services, "including shame and stigma," the paper states. "We need to end the silence that surrounds the issue of first responder mental health. "Also, departments should encourage or require first responders to access mental health services annually.
Thousands expected to take to NYC streets for WorldPride
(CNN) - New York has always been a major Pride destination, but this year's celebration is expected to draw record crowds. "The LGBTQ community is an essential part of NYC," New York Police Department Commissioner James O'Neill said at a news conference on Tuesday. Sunday's march caps off a month of events that included a rally commemorating Stonewall 50, Youth Pride and Pride Island, a three-day outdoor music festival. "New York City is the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ rights movement," Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted last week. Last year's march in New York City featured more than 550 groups and more than 100 floats.
