EVERGREEN, Va. โ Wednesday marks five years since a violent tornado with winds up to 145 miles per hour tore through Appomattox County, leading to one personโs death and several othersโ injuries. Hereโs his account of what happened on Feb. 25, 2016, the day after the tornado, when he visited Evergreen:I remember traveling to Evergreen the day after the tornado. When youโre on-air tracking severe weather, in your mind youโre hoping and praying that the storm is behaving itself and that itโs not doing any damage at all to the communities youโre talking about on TV. And the scenes from Evergreen were like what I saw in Tornado Alley, not in Virginia. I remember meeting the Appomattox County High School softball team as they were cleaning up debris left behind.

Freezinโ for a reason: Polar Plunge exceeds fundraising goal for Special Olympics Virginia
DALEVILLE, Va. โ Saturday marked another successful polar plunge benefitting Special Olympics Virginia. The scenery was a little different for this yearโs Polar Plunge but the cause was the same. โWe were freezinโ for a reason,โ WSLS 10 News team co-captain and anchor Brittny McGraw said. โYou canโt ask for a more worthy organization than the Special Olympics of Virginia,โ Haniewich said. Thanks to your generous donations, the 10 News team also exceeded its goal, raising $6,650.
Ice, Ice Baby! New River Polar Plunge just days away
As of Wednesday night, the New River Polar Plunge was about $12,500 shy of its $55,000 goal. 10 News has a team ready to take the plunge, and as of 10:45 p.m. Wednesday night, had raised nearly $6,000. This event is one of five Polar Plunge Festivals in Virginia. Thereโs a similar event in Prince William County on Saturday and a 'Solar Plungeโ in Richmond on June 13. The plunge season kicked off in Fairfax on Jan. 25 and the biggest plunge took place Feb. 7-8 in Virginia Beach.
List of stops on the 2017 Virginia Proud Weather Tour
This year, the Virginia Proud Weather Tour will honor fire and emergency medical services first responders throughout Southwest Virginia. The tour begins Monday, May 1 and will take Jeff Haniewich to 15 counties over the course of three weeks. Below is the schedule of where Jeff will be each day of the tour. 2016's Stop 21: Henry County
HENRY COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The Virginia Proud Weather Tour concluded in Henry County on Thursday. Jeff Haniewich stopped by the Rooster Walk Music & Arts Festival, which starts Thursday and lasts until Sunday. Johnny Buck, the co-founder of the festival, said the event is in memory of two of his close childhood friends, Edwin "the Rooster" Penn and Walker Shank. Buck said the two loved music and the outdoors. Besides music, there's also multiple booths selling a variety of products at the festival.
2016's Stop 20: Halifax County
HALIFAX COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Stop 20 on the Virginia Proud Weather Tour took Jeff Haniewich to the Virginia International Raceway. Connie Nyholm, the owner of VIR, said that this upcoming weekend is the Wisko Grand Prix on May 28 and 29. Tickets are $10 to $25 and parking is free. The restaurant at the track has 14 craft beers on tap. On Thursday, the Virginia Proud Weather Tour concludes in Henry County at The Rooster Walk Music & Art Festival.
2016's Stop 19: Appomattox County
APPOMATTOX COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Stop 19 on the Virginia Proud Weather Tour took Jeff Haniewich and Lindsey Ward to Evergreen, three months after a deadly tornado hit. On Tuesday, WSLS 10 announced Rebuilding Hope, a partnership between WSLS 10, God's Pit Crew and Spirit FM to rebuild the home of Nancy Harris. Not only did Harris lose her home, she also lost her husband when the tornado hit February 24. On Wednesday, Jeff will be in Halifax County.
2016's Stop 17: Lynchburg Regional Airport
CAMPBELL COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Stop 17 on the Virginia Proud Weather took Jeff Haniewich to the Lynchburg Regional Airport ahead of the Lynchburg Regional Airshow this weekend. Jeff had the opportunity to ride in an L-39 Albatros on Friday. That's one of the jets that will be flying in the show. On Monday, the tour will be in the Bland and Wythe County line to the Big Walker Lookout and County Store.
