Route 221 in Bedford County reopens after fatal crash

Crash happened about 5 miles west of Lynchburg

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police responded to a fatal crash on Friday afternoon.

U.S. Route 221 in Bedford County is open again after the crash shut down all lanes of the road.

The three-vehicle crash happened at 3:25 p.m. when a vehicle going east on Route 221 crossed the center line, sideswiped a vehicle and then struck another vehicle head-on, according to state police.

The crash happened in the vicinity of Gladden Circle, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Traffic was diverted onto Route 646 and then back onto Route 221.
