3 hurt, 1 charged in I-81 wreck involving tractor-trailers and RV
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – UPDATE
All lanes are now open.
Northbound I-81 near Roanoke is closed following a wreck involving two tractor-trailers and an RV, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The wreck happened just north of the 146.8 mile marker, close to the Hollins exit.
A Stevens Transport tractor-trailer was traveling south on I-81 when the truck ran off the left side of the roadway, crossed the median and struck a northbound tractor-trailer and a Sunseeker RV, according to authorities.
The Stevens Transport tractor-trailer was loaded with frozen French fries and remained upright, while the other tractor-trailer was loaded with fruits and vegetables and overturned in the crash, state police said. Hazardous materials crews were called to clean up fuel that had leaked from the tractor-trailers' fuel tanks.
The driver of the Stevens Transport tractor-trailer, 32-year-old Shekhe Abdirahmani Chedi, is charged with reckless driving.
Both tractor-trailer drivers came out of the accident without any injuries.
Three people in the RV were transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to state police.
VDOT said it is unknown how long the road will be closed and that northbound traffic is being detoured at Exit 146 onto Route 11.
