17-year-old charged after suspicious call at Alleghany High School

ALLEGHANY COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The person who placed a suspicious call to Alleghany High School now has charges pending against him or her, according to Fred Vaughan with Alleghany County Public Schools.

Vaughan, the director of human resources and pupil personnel, said in a letter that criminal charges are now pending against a juvenile suspect who law enforcement and school division personnel identified as making the call.

The 17-year-old Clifton Forge resident has been charged with one count of verbally communicating a threat to a school, according to state police.

All Alleghany County Public School buildings were under a shelter in place order for part of the day on Friday.

At 9:27 a.m., Alleghany High School was put on lockdown after receiving a suspicious call.

A little while later, the lockdown was reduced to a shelter in place, and that was in effect for all school buildings as a precaution.

The school system specified that a no time was there an active shooter or unauthorized person in any school building.

At 12:25 p.m., the shelter in place status was lifted from all buildings.
