2016's Stop 10: Alleghany County

ALLEGHANY COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Stop 10 on the Virginia Proud Weather Tour took Jeff Haniewich to the Historic Masonic Theatre in Clifton Forge.

Construction at the theatre is still underway as part of the $3 million renovations.

The building was built in 1905 and operated up until 2010, when the reconstruction project began, according to John Hillert with the Masonic Theatre Preservation Foundation.

It was built as a Masonic lodge and opera house.

"The affinity for this theatre is amazing," said Hillert.

A soft opening for the theatre is scheduled for June 3, right before the Heritage Day Festival the following day.

Maggie Perdue, with the Masonic Theatre Preservation Foundation, has many special memories from the building.

"I took dance classes up in the ballroom. I came to shows and even my grandmother was here when Gene Autry rode across the stage on a horse," said Perdue.

On Thursday, Jeff will be at Bridgewater Plaza at Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford County.
