Stop 3: Campbell County

The county has 350 volunteer firefighters and 36 full-time fire and EMS staff

ALTAVISTA, Va. – Stop 3 on the Virginia Proud Weather Tour took Jeff Haniewich to the town of Altavista in Campbell County.

Countywide, there are 350 volunteer firefighters and 36 full-time fire and EMS staff in the county.

Earlier this year, the Altavista Rescue Squad closed its doors which caused responsibilities to shuffle in the county.

"At the end of March, the local rescue agency had to go out of business. So the county staff deployed resources down here in partnership with the Altavista Fire Department, who was gracious enough to host us and make accommodations for our crew and apparatus. And in that way, we've been able to continue to provide coverage to the community with our professionally trained and highly qualified staff. We're very grateful to the fire department for their hospitality and their partnership and we really hope that this model of collaboration is one that takes hold throughout the county," said Campbell County Administrator Frank Rogers.

Stop 4 on the tour will take Jeff to Covington in Alleghany County.
