Chasing down history with our extended heat wave

Several days of 90-degree heat yet to come

ROANOKE, Va. – We have officially recorded 13 consecutive days of 90-degree heat. Day 14 likely comes Sunday afternoon. In any event we have already made it on the list of top 10 longest stretches of consecutive days of 90-degree heat.

We have the opportunity for three more before a cold front brings us back down to the 80s by Wednesday. If we do in fact reach 90 those three days, we would finish with the fourth longest stretch on record.

Sunday morning, Roanoke flirted with another long -standing record. The all-time record high low temperature in Roanoke is 81 degrees. For much of the morning the temperature sensor at the Roanoke Regional Airport was at 80 degrees. The low temperature was 79 degrees. If the temperature doesn't fall below 79 by midnight, that number would be a tie for the fifth warmest morning for any month on record and the third warmest July morning on record. Records began in 1912. For the day itself, Roanoke did surpass its old record of 76 degrees set back in 2011.

The chance for a few strong storms stays with us Sunday and cooler air will pour in mid-week.
