BARTOW, Fla. – A Florida sheriff's sergeant and a paramedic were trapped in a patrol car late Sunday night after a live power pole and electrical lines fell on it while they were driving during Hurricane Irma.
Polk County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Chris Lynn and Polk County Fire Rescue paramedic James Schaill were traveling from a Lakeland hospital, where they had dropped off a patient, when the power pole and live wire tumbled onto Schaill's patrol car.
They were trapped for about two hours before electric crews were able to disconnect the lines.
Both men eventually got out of the car about 1:15 a.m. Monday.
Polk County Fire Rescue spokesman Kevin Watler said the men have returned to work to assist with hurricane recovery efforts.
