Winter coming early, leaving late

40% of lower 48 states have had a freeze so far this year

Nearly 66% of those states would already have a first freeze during normal winter years. The average first freeze over the past 10 years is a week later than the average in 1971 to 1980 -- before the shrinking water trend.

The changes could mean more fruit and vegetable growth. However, an increase winter allergies are also a possibility.
