More like spring today, brutal cold arrives on Christmas

Coldest air of the season by far settles in early next week

ROANOKE, Va. – After a very warm start to Tuesday morning, sunshine will help push temperatures back into the mid to upper 60s by the afternoon. The stiff breeze to a tune of 15-25 mph will be the only hiccup.

The next chance of rain arrives Wednesday around lunch. The best chance for a soaking rain will occur from Roanoke to Lynchburg and points south. We'll dry things out for the first official day of winter Thursday.

UNSETTLED CHRISTMAS WEEKEND:

A much more potent system arrives on Saturday, bringing rain and wind back to the area. Behind that system arrives a batch of pure Arctic air.

After a mild start to Christmas, Arctic air will pour in for the second half of the day and especially by next Tuesday. Highs likely won't make it out of the 20s Tuesday afternoon.
