Very warm start to Wednesday; Showers move in later in the morning, afternoon

Arctic Blast arrives shortly after Christmas

ROANOKE, Va. – Temperatures to start the morning are running warmer than our afternoon highs typically do for this time of year. Overcast skies will give way to a chance for a few showers, mainly along and south of 460. Highs will hold steady in the mid-50s Wednesday.

Thursday, The first day of winter, will feature more seasonable temperatures as we return to the upper 40s with plenty of sunshine. The 50s and 60s make a short comeback to start Christmas weekend.

A potent storm system will be arriving to the area on Saturday bringing rain, wind, and a dose of Arctic air. At this time, for most of us, it does not look like moisture will hang on long enough for the cold air to catch up with it to change the rain into enough snow to qualify as a white Christmas.

A chunk of pure Arctic air blasts in Christmas evening and settles in later on Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs by Wednesday may not make it out of the 20s with wind chills at times in the single digits and possibly below zero.
