Heavy rain moves in late Monday, flooding possible

1-3" of rain possible through Friday

ROANOKE, Va. – On and off showers will continue Monday, but later Monday night the potential for steady, heavy rain returns. Rain could be heavy at times overnight and for the Tuesday morning commute.

Some of this in areas along and north of Roanoke and Lynchburg will fall as freezing rain. Most ice accumulation will be held to elevated surfaces like Monday morning.

The rain will continue through much of Tuesday. A widespread 1-2" of rain is expected through Tuesday night. Isolated amounts of 3" could be possible west of intersate 81.

The areas in orange, and especially red, will have the relatively speaking best chance to see localized flooding. The ground in these areas can only take a couple of inches of water in a 6 hour span. The numbers above are NOT rainfall amounts, but rather the amount of rain needed in a 6 hour period to cause flooding.

Winds will pick up late Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Gusts could top 45 mph at times. Trees with weak root system could fall due to the saturated ground.

Another round of steady rain is possible Friday. Below is the expected rain for the week.
