ROANOKE, Va. – Happy Saturday and welcome to the weekend! It’s a frosty start to the day as many areas have dropped into the 20s this morning.
Don’t let the cold start fool you, as we’re actually expecting a pretty mild day overall. Temperatures quickly rise into the 50s by afternoon under mostly sunny skies.
Our warmest zone will be Southside and the coolest will be the New River Valley.
The wind has been a big story the past two days, but we have good news to pass along! It won’t be nearly as breezy or gusty as Thursday or Friday.
Look for sustained winds out of the west at five to ten miles per hour, with occasional stronger gusts possible.
The combination of weaker winds, abundant sunshine and mild afternoon temperatures make today the “pick day” of the weekend!
The weather takes another turn Sunday as a storm system sends clouds and rain our way.
I believe Sunday will be cooler than today, but still too warm for any winter weather to develop.
Some showers could linger into Monday morning, especially close to the NC/VA border.
The weather pattern stays active during the upcoming work week. As it stands now, I think we’ll be tracking storms Tuesday and Thursday.
The forecast models are hinting at enough cold air to squeeze out some snowflakes north on Tuesday. Thursday’s storm is likely to produce a chilly rain for most.
We’re also mainly looking at chilly air as we flip the calendar over to February.
