Gov. McAuliffe signs suicide, bullying prevention laws

Laws go into effect July 1

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Gov. Terry McAuliffe signed two bills at a high school in Northern Virginia on Tuesday afternoon that address bullying and suicide prevention, according to WAVY.

The NBC affiliate reports that one law will require schools to notify parents if their child is involved in bullying as either a victim or an aggressor.

The second requires school counselors to receive training in bullying, suicide prevention and mental health disorders, including depression and substance abuse, when they are either initially getting their initial state licenses or renewing one.

The new laws will take effect July 1.Â
