Driver charged, one person dead after crash on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County

Crash happened few miles north of Christiansburg

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. – One person is dead after an SUV hit a tractor-trailer on Interstate 81 on Tuesday morning, according to Virginia State Police.

Travis Martin, of Powhatan, Virginia, the driver of the SUV, was arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving with a revoked license. State police say his license was revoked because of DUI and that more charges may be filed against him.

The crash happened on I-81 South at mile marker 122, which is a few miles north of the Christiansburg exit.

The Ford Expedition hit the tractor-trailer, which was parked on the side of the road, because it was broken down, according to police.

The passenger in the SUV was killed, while neither the SUV's driver nor the tractor-trailer driver was hurt.

The tractor-trailer had cones and flares out, as it's supposed to when pulled over on the side of a road.

The south left lane, center lane, right lane, and right shoulder were temporarily closed because of the crash and traffic backups were about two miles around noon, according to VDOT.
