Hikers rescued on McAfee's Knob after heat distress

Temperatures were 96 degrees, but felt like more than 100 degrees.

ROANOKE CO. – Roanoke County Fire and Rescue responded to McAfee's Knob after reports of hikers with heat distress.

The call came in Saturday about 5:45 p.m., and workers found the hikers about 6 p.m.

The hikers were coming off the trail when they ran out of water. The group consisted of two adults and three children. They were all given water and medical assistance. Crews drove them back to their vehicle. All the hikers declined to be taken to a hospital.

Crews from Masons Cove Station 10, Hollins Station 5, Clearbrook Station 7, Fort Lewis Station 9, a Battalion Chief and EMS supervisor responded with three medic units and three off-road vehicles.

At the time, temperatures were 96 degrees, but felt like more than 100 degrees.

The Roanoke County Fire and Rescue reminds hikers to bring plenty of water, wear proper clothing and bring a cell phone on your hike.
