Fire destroys Henry County home

No one home at the time, no one injured

AXTON, Va. – A Henry County family is without a home after a fire in Axton.

The home at 224 Country Place Rd. was first reported to be on fire around 11:30 a.m.

No one was home at the time, but a car in the driveway was heavily damaged and bystanders said a pet may have died in the fire.

Multiple agencies from Martinsville and Henry County were on scene for hours.

Andy Quirk, who was working nearby, and a neighbor called 911.

"I was driving down the end of the road here and I saw smoke coming off the top of a house," Quirk recalled.

"(The neighbor and I) managed to move one car out of the way, an older car. We could drop the hand brake and push it out of the way," said Quirk. "I was running around the house, trying to see if there's a way in or seeing if there's anybody in the window. Seeing if anybody's banging, trying to come out."

There was no word Wednesday evening about the cause.
