Halifax County woman still missing one week after disappearing; co-workers still in shock

Emma Layne last seen at Cody convenience store in Nathalie June 17

HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. – Co-workers of a Halifax County woman missing since last Saturday are still struggling to deal with her disappearance.

Despite multiple days of searching by multiple law enforcement agencies, Emma Layne still has not been found.

Around 7 p.m. last Saturday, Emma Layne, 52, disappeared from Cody Store in Nathalie.

When co-worker Rebecca Trickey left work Saturday evening, Layne was still there.

When Trickey found out Layne had disappeared, she was shocked.

"Oh, my God. It was just mind blowing. It was just a shock to us all," said Trickey.

The store does have surveillance cameras, but Trickey said she doesn't know if there's video that may offer clues as to what happened.

The Halifax County Sheriff's Office declined to comment Friday about the circumstances surrounding Layne's disappearance and declined to provide an update on the search.

For Trickey and the other employees at the store, the past week hasn't been easy.

"It's been hard. Really hard," Trickey said. "(Layne's) an all-around nice person and we just miss her and want her back."

Layne's disappearance has also been weighing on customers.

Trickey said customers have been expressing their concerns all week.

"She had so many people come to this store. They all love her. We all love her," said Trickey.

Marvin Owen delivers chips and other items to the store.

He said in the two years that he's been making deliveries there he's gotten to know Layne well.

"She's very friendly, very outgoing, very courteous, and a good sense of humor," Owen said.

The Halifax County Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police spent most of the week searching for her, but so far no information has been released about any possible leads.

"To find out that she's gone like that, that's a terrible thing," said Owen. "I just pray that the law enforcement will be able to find out what happened to her."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.
