CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Video shows Roanoke County business burglary

Several commercial business break-ins on Electric Road

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Police believe one person is responsible for a series of break-ins in Roanoke County. The last one happened Friday, May 5, at a doctor's office.

If you drive on Electric Road, you may pass one of the commercial businesses that was broken into during the last month.

WSLS 10 has obtained video of one of the recent break-ins at a business on Electric Road.

In the video, you can see the person running through the parking lot at the bottom left of the screen, breaking his way inside the building.

The person in the ball cap then searches behind a counter and eventually runs back out the same door.

"It doesn't make any difference if it's a doctor or dentist or counseling service or insurance. It's just random businesses that he's targeting," said David McMillan, commander for Criminal Investigation Division for the Roanoke County Police Department.

McMillan says since April 14 more than eight small business break-ins and burglaries were reported.

Surveillance video from this business he didn't want to reveal is from April 23. Nothing was taken from that office, but that's not always the case.

"Not all of them have cameras. Not all of them are alarmed. This one was alarmed but as you'll see, he still runs in and looks for whatever he is looking for before he leaves," said McMillan.

Six of the 10 burglaries happened on Electric Road and two on Brambleton Avenue. The entry point is always through a broken window.

McMillan says petty cash was stolen from three of the locations.

"Maybe (they) leave the light on that they normally would leave on so it would discourage burglaries. But as you can see with this break-in the place was well lit and it didn't make a difference to him," said McMillan.

A dentist's office on Brambleton Road reported to police stolen laptops, monitors, keyboard and TVs. We're told a crime prevention officer is reaching out to businesses to keep them informed on what's going on with the burglaries.
