Press Release from Roanoke County Police—Sgt. C.L. Kuyper

Officers of the Roanoke County Police Department responded to a home in the 200 block of Knoll Road at 4:15 p.m. Saturday in reference to serving a Domestic Assault and Battery warrant and Emergency Protectice Order on Bryan J. Valentine who lives at the address.

Upon arrival, officers made verbal contact with Valentine and asked him to leave the home so he could be served the warrant.

Mr. Valentine closed the door and barricade himself inside the home.

Roanoke County SWAT team as well as the crisis negotiation team were called to the scene to assist officers.

After almost eight hours of unsuccessful negotiation attempts, Roanoke County Police SWAT set off “chemical irritants” into the home in attempt to make Valentine exit.

More failed attempts forced the SWAT team to force entry through the home’s attic, where they took Valentine into custody.

In addition to the outstanding warrant, Valentine was charged with misdemeanor Obstruction of Justice and misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct.

Further charges related to the incident are pending.

Valentine is currently being held in the Roanoke County jail without bond.

I never at any point said anything negative about the police or swat team for that matter, or in the way they handled the situation. I am quite proud of how they blocked off the area and handled everything. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the police, have quite a few friends who are officers and even have a friend on the Roanoke County swat team.

My problem lies with the way this was kept hush-hush by the media and especially by the management here. I wonder how many parents who live here know that their teen age child was out there watching the whole thing from a dark area? If these kids could see the persons windows, they were in his line of fire.

My 17 year old was one of the dumb teens who were out there. His friends called him to tell him what was happening, stupidity kicked in, and he snuck out to join them. While I thought he was in bed asleep, he was putting himself in danger. What if he had been shot?

Parents are walking around right now who have no clue of what happened and thinking they live in a safe place. They need to know what happened so that they can talk to their children and maybe sleep with one eye open. This was a serious wake up call for me on how even though you can teach your child right from wrong and try to protect them, because they think they’re invincible, they will do stupid things like this.

I would not have known any of this had happened if he hadn’t come in and told me. I commend the police for making them move to a safer location. I wish they would have checked ID’s and drug his little butt inside to me. At the same time, they were dealing with something serious and didn’t need to be bothered by this.

Management has kept it quiet, it was not in the news, kids put themselves in harms way and parents are walking around in their little utopia, oblivious to the dangers that their kids faced that night. If the news had at least reported it, parents would know and in turn be able to talk to their kids about the dangers of things like this and keep a closer eye on them.

Yes, they should never have been outside at 3 in the morning, especially on a school night, and most knew better. Then again, at their age, they’re invincible, don’t have even the slightest idea of how permanent death is, and most have been desensitized by video games. To them, this was just another shoot-em-up!

My frustration is with everyone trying to keep this quiet, not with the police. They did exactly what they were supposed to do and handled it quite well.

The SWAT team is called out all of the time and it doesn’t make the news!!  And these officers would never let anything happen near a daycare that had anyone in it!!!  They always make sure everyone in the area is secure before any action is taken. Just a reminder that these men risk their lives daily as police officers and even more each time they answer a SWAT call.  I am sick of people having negative comments about our police officers!! Try to show some respect for a change!! If it were your family member being held hostage or your neighbor that was selling crack out of their house , you would be more than thankful to have them there!!!!

On Tuesday night we arrived at home to find the entrance blocked to our apartment complex in Vinton. 3 hours later we heard multiple gunshots. Apparently the person was firing randomly at officers. The SWAT team eventually entered and arrested the suspect after firing tear gas/smoke bombs. Funny how this never even made the news and it was right behind a daycare center which was in the direct line of fire. If it had been during daylight hours, children could have been killed. I’m sure the parents who take their children to this daycare aren’t even aware that this happened.
