Troopers said the truck overturned onto the guardrail, causing it to lose its entire load of scrap metal. Parts of the load rained down onto a house below, on the hillside where the truck overturned.
Debris of scrap metal fell into the house. State police said a man inside the home at the time of the crash did not sustain any injuries.
The truck's driver, identified as Timothy C. Hoss, 50, of Bristol, Va., was flown to Bristol Medical Center with serious injuries. State police say Hoss was wearing a seat-belt.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending, police say. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
VDOT responded to the scene to assist with cleanup of the debris. All lanes were reopened by 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
