DUBLIN, Va. – Pulaski County residents have a limited-time chance to leave a permanent mark on history. County officials announced Tuesday that a grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation will fund a community-driven mosaic mural commemorating Pulaski County’s role in the American Revolution — and anyone can pick up a paintbrush and be part of it.
The $3,950 matching grant will support the creation of a large mosaic mural celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. Matching funds are being provided jointly by Pulaski County Tourism and the Belle Hampton Legacy Center. When complete, the mural will be installed on the historic barn at Belle Hampton Farm in Dublin — a property that is itself 250 years old and has significant Revolutionary War ties.
“Belle Hampton Farm is a 250-year-old farm here in Pulaski County that has some pretty strong revolutionary roots,” said Erika Tolbert, Pulaski County Director of Tourism. “It was a great way to tie celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday to Pulaski County’s role in that through a commemorative mural.”
How to participate
Community members are invited to paint individual tiles that will be incorporated into the final mural design. Only 200 tiles are available, and some have already been reserved.
Tile-painting opportunities begin April 1 during regular business hours at the Wilderness Road Regional Museum in Newbern. Additional opportunities will be offered at several upcoming events:
- May 30 — Spring Fly-In at New River Valley Regional Airport
- June 7 — Loyalist Day at the Wilderness Road Regional Museum
- June 19 — Juneteenth Celebration at the Wilderness Road Regional Museum
The project runs through June, or until all tiles are claimed.
Tolbert said the content of each tile is entirely up to the painter. “It can really be anything that you deem important for Pulaski County or for yourself — because this will be there until the end of time,” she said.
A lasting legacy for the community
Officials say the project is designed to give residents more than just a photo opportunity — it’s a chance to be woven into the county’s history.
“They can take their grandchildren and show them later that this is something that I participated in and I was part of,” Tolbert said.
April Martin, Pulaski County VA250 Committee Chair, said the mural reflects a broader community purpose.
“This mural is more than a work of art — it is a reflection of our community’s shared history and pride,” Martin said. “As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, this project gives residents a unique opportunity to connect with our Revolutionary War roots and leave a lasting mark for future generations to experience and appreciate.”
Mural unveiling
The completed mural will be unveiled at the Belle Hampton Legacy Center’s fundraising event, Red, White, & You, scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026.
