Work ethic, effort highlight Salem RidgeYaks 2026 goals

Salem opens

SALEM, Va. – A new era of Salem baseball is set to get started as the newly rebranded Salem RidgeYaks held its media day ahead of the 2026 season.

Players and staff gathered in center field for the team’s official photo, showcasing new uniforms and logos — the franchise’s first major rebrand since 2009.

On the field, we can expect some familiar names and faces to return. Salem returns several of the Boston Red Sox organization’s top prospects, including outfielders Enddy Azocar and Starlyn Núñez. The pitching staff is also a strength, with eight arms ranked among the organization’s top talent, highlighted by Ethan Walker.

Another notable returner is D’Angelo Ortiz, son of Hall of Famer David Ortiz.

Second-year manager Ozzie Chavez said the team’s development will be key to its success.

“The guys that have gone out today, they work hard in spring training,” Chavez said. “Little by little — pitching, defense and hitting. The guys are young, but they want to move forward.”

Ortiz emphasized his focus at the plate heading into the season.

“I take a lot of pride in being a good hitter, but there’s a lot of categories in hitting,” Ortiz said. “If you want to get to the big leagues, you’ve got to be above average in those. I’m just looking to do some damage this year.”

Infielder Stanley Tucker said effort will define the RidgeYaks’ identity.

“A big strength will be the effort,” Tucker said. “We’re going to fly around, play hard — no matter the night or situation. We’re going to play the game the right way.”

Salem opens its season Thursday at home against Delmarva, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
