The failure of Michael Johnson’s attempt to transform track and field, the Grand Slam Track league, hovered over big swaths of the sport’s world championships this week.

The history books will say U.S. runner Rai Benjamin won the 400-meter hurdles at the world championships in a season-best 46.52 seconds in Tokyo, a year after his Paris Olympic gold.

Noah Lyles pulled ahead of Kenny Bednarek heading into the straightaway then held him off down the stretch to capture his fourth title in a much-awaited 200 meters at the world championships.
