Britain’s National Gallery has announced it will use almost half a billion dollars in donations to open a new wing that will allow it to expand its collection into modern art.

Portuguese-British artist Paula Rego, who created bold, visceral works inspired by fairy tales and her own life, has died at the age of 87.

Visitors to the gallery reported on social media that the landmark building, on the south bank of the Thames, has been locked down as a result of the incident.
