Error mars vote count in NYC mayoral primary
The Democratic primary for mayor of New York City was thrown into a state of confusion Tuesday when election officials abruptly retracted their latest report on the vote count after realizing it had been corrupted by test data never cleared from a computer system.
Suspect in attack on Asian American woman in NYC is arrested
Police said Brandon Elliot, 38, is the man seen on surveillance video kicking and stomping the woman near Times Square on Monday. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the attack โabsolutely disgusting and outrageousโ and said it was โabsolutely unacceptableโ that witnesses didnโt help the woman. Two lobby workers, described by their union as doormen, were seen on video witnessing the attack but failing to help Kari. This year in New York City, there have been 33 hate crimes with an Asian victim as of Sunday, police said. Joo Han, the deputy director of the Asian American Federation, called the plainclothes patrols a โknee-jerk responseโ that ignored misgivings she said many people in Asian communities have about law enforcement.
Video shows vicious attack of Asian American woman in NYC
On Friday, in the same neighborhood as Monday's attack, a 65-year-old Asian American woman was accosted by a man waving an unknown object and shouting anti-Asian insults. He is not suspected in Monday's attack. Andrew Cuomo called Monday's attack โhorrifying and repugnant" and he ordered a state police hate crimes task force to offer its assistance to the NYPD. The neighborhood where Monday's attack occurred, Hell's Kitchen, is predominantly white, with an Asian population of less than 20%, according to city demographic data. Shea called Monday's attack โdisgusting," telling TV station NY1: โI donโt know who attacks a 65-year-old woman and leaves her on the street like that."
Oakland launches guaranteed pay plan for low-income people
The Oakland Resilient Families program has so far raised $6.75 million from private donors including Blue Meridian Partners, a national philanthropy group. โDirect investment in the community in response to systemic injustices isn't new.โThe idea of a guaranteed income dates to the 18th century. โThe fact that mayors are piloting (guaranteed income programs), using political capital to raise capital to allow their constituents to have basic necessities, is a policy failure," Tubbs said. โIt's an admission that we need to do more.โIt's unclear what a national guaranteed income program would look like. AdA form of guaranteed income could take effect for many parents this year as part of the latest federal stimulus package.
Asian Americans seek greater political power after shootings
It's also spurring her and other Asian Americans to push for greater political influence in Washington and other power centers. President Joe Biden and his aides have been repeatedly pressed to include Asian Americans in his Cabinet. AdโI think symbolism and representation matters, but only up to a point,โ said Aarti Kohli, executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice. โThose things all contribute to lower rates of political participation among Asian Americans, but people โ mistakenly, I think โ assume that Asian Americans are somehow less interested in U.S. civic life.โAdThat's evolving. โAsian Americans didn't necessarily grow up with that vocabulary of advocacy and how to fight for ourselves," Meng said.
Andrew Yang takes lead in California data privacy measure
It would also create a state agency to enforce consumer privacy protections. โThe amount of data weโre giving up is unprecedented in human history,โ says Yang, who lives in New York but is helping lead the campaign for a data privacy initiative on Californiaโs Nov. 3 ballot. The California Privacy Rights Act of 2020 would expand the rights Californians were given to their personal data in a groundbreaking law approved two years ago, which took effect in January. The California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 was intended to give residents more control over their personal information collected online. โAs soon as other states see that Californians have these data and privacy rights, theyโre going to want the same thing.โ
Mayors vow to launch guaranteed income programs across US
Mayors in at least 25 cities โ from Los Angeles to Paterson, New Jersey โ have pledged to support such programs as part of the group Mayors for a Guaranteed Income. They are led by Michael Tubbs, the 30-year-old mayor of Stockton, California, who launched one of the country's first guaranteed income programs last year with the help of private donations from Silicon Valley. The idea of guaranteed income programs has been around for decades, but it got a lot of attention in the U.S. as the centerpiece of Andrew Yang's failed bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. โWe understand that a guaranteed income is not a panacea for everything (but) is a powerful tool that provides a floor for everyone." But some of the other programs outlined Wednesday by mayors at a news conference would rely on a mix of public and private money.

NY doctor charged in serial sexual assaults on patients
In this Feb. 23, 2016 photo, Robert Hadden appears in Manhattan Supreme Court in New York. Hadden, a former New York gynecologist accused of sexually abusing more than two dozen patients, including children and the wife of former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, is now facing federal charges. Prosecutors described the doctor, Robert A. Hadden, 62, as a predator in a white coat, accusing him of singling out young and unsuspecting victims, including a young girl hed delivered at birth. The federal charges will be the second time Hadden is prosecuted over alleged abuse of patients. He used the cover of conducting medical examinations to engage in sexual abuse that he passed off as normal and medically necessary, Strauss said.
Andrew and Evelyn Yang share what's behind his unlikely run
(CNN) - Andrew Yang couldn't wait for his warm up act to finish. "Let's give a warm Yang Gang welcome to my wife Evelyn Yang," he obliged. To say this is not what Evelyn Yang imagined when she met and married her businessman husband defines understatement. Evelyn Yang admits that she misses her husband when they're apart, but her focus has been on her family. But Andrew Yang is still in the race and closed the third fundraising quarter with $10 million in donations.
Yang supports 'Medicare for All' label, would keep private insurance
(CNN) - Businessman Andrew Yang said he supports "Medicare for All" but would keep the option of private insurance, in stark contrast to Sen. Bernie Sanders' original "Medicare for All" plan that essentially eliminates private insurers. Medicare for All, which has been spearheaded by Sanders, has emerged as a key fault line for 2020 Democratic candidates. It does not say Medicare for All, and all private insurance is hereby illegal," Yang said. Yang's goal, he said, is to "demonstrate to the American people that private insurance is not what you need" and that the Medicare plan is "superior to your current insurance." He condemned the private insurance business model, saying it is "ratcheting up prices, year after year" and hurting families and businesses.
7 takeaways from Iowa Democrats' biggest night of the year
The Iowa Democratic Party's Liberty and Justice Celebration -- the renamed former Jefferson-Jackson Dinner -- once helped launch then-Sen. Barack Obama ahead of Hillary Clinton in the lead-up to the 2008 Iowa Democratic caucuses. Here are seven takeaways from the Liberty and Justice Celebration:Flexing organizational muscleWith more than 13,000 tickets sold, Friday night was the biggest Democratic event of the year in Iowa. But Sanders, the only candidate to use a podium, arrived with an olive branch, saying his campaign had donated $20,000 to the Iowa Democratic Party. But some Democrats focus on their opponentsThe comments that got more attention, however, were the riskier lines where Democrats took on Democrats, some of whom shared the stage mere minutes apart. O'Rourke spoke to those supporters, and then Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Troy Price told the crowd inside the arena that the former lawmaker wouldn't be speaking Friday night.
7 things to watch during the CNN/New York Times Democratic presidential debate
Warren comes into the debate with an earned confidence, one that has been on display at well-attended rallies across the country. Biden told supporters earlier this month that having plans is "not enough" and that the country won't support "electing a planner." Standing outTuesday night's debate stage will be the largest in modern history, presenting candidates with the question of how to stand out when flanked by eleven other candidates. The billionaire businessman and major Democratic donor, after initially declining to run for President, announced a Presidential bid in July. But standing on a debate stage with some of the Democratic Party's biggest names all around you is a different environment and one that the longtime donor has not yet experienced.
Democrats set date for November debate in Georgia
(CNN) - The Democratic National Committee announced Tuesday that the fifth Democratic presidential primary debate will be held on November 20 in Georgia. Last month, the DNC raised the polling and donor thresholds required to qualify for the November debate. Candidates also have a new option of reaching at least 5% in two polls of the early-voting states. The deadline for qualifying polls and donations for the November debate will be November 13 at 11:59 p.m., according to the DNC. The DNC's announcement comes one week before the fourth Democratic presidential primary debate, hosted by CNN and The New York Times, is set to take place in Ohio.
Andrew Yang qualifies for November Democratic debate
Democratic presidential candidate former tech executive Andrew Yang speaks during the Democratic Presidential Debate at Texas Southern University's Health and PE Center on Sept. 12, 2019, in Houston. (CNN) - Businessman Andrew Yang qualified for the Democratic debate in November by receiving 3% in a new Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday. Polling requirements are slightly more strenuous for the November debate, with multiple paths to qualification. Candidates have until late October to reach polling and grassroots fundraising thresholds set by the DNC. Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julin Castro, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and former Rep. Beto O'Rourke have all hit the required donor mark, but haven't received sufficient polling support.
Poll: Warren, Biden locked in tight race for Dem nomination
But the new Monmouth poll confirms other recent polling suggesting a far tighter race for the Democratic nomination. Sanders and Biden are also viewed favorably by around three-quarters of Democratic voters, but their unfavorable ratings were higher (around one-in-five found each unfavorable). Trump's favorability was the worst among registered voters (compared to the top Democratic candidates), with 43% favorable and 56% unfavorable. The Monmouth University Poll was conducted by telephone from September 23 to 29, 2019 with 1,161 adults in the United States. The results in this release are based on 1,017 registered voters and have a +/- 3.1 percentage point sampling margin of error.
Andrew Yang raises $10 million in third quarter
(CNN) - Andrew Yang raised $10 million in the third quarter of 2019, his campaign tells CNN, a substantial haul that dwarfs the $2.8 million the businessman-turned-politician raised in the second quarter of this year. But it does land Yang close to the $11.6 million that California Sen. Kamala Harris raised in the third quarter and markedly higher than candidates like New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, who announced on Tuesday he had raised $6 million in the third quarter. Yang enters the final three months of 2019 with $6.3 million in the bank, his campaign said. "Andrew Yang is the only contender showing exponential growth in the third quarter, more than tripling his fundraising number from last quarter," said Zach Graumann, Yang's campaign manager. Yang branded merchandise is ubiquitous as his campaign rallies, where countless attendees sport "MATH" ("Make America Think Harder") hats, Yang commemorative campaign buttons and a wide assortment of Yang branded T-shirts.
10 presidential candidates to appear at LGBTQ town hall
CNN(CNN) - Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has accepted the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's invitation to appear at a CNN town hall next week focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer issues, bringing the number of Democratic presidential candidates participating in this historic event to 10. ET and feature two Democratic presidential candidates appearing back-to-back each hour throughout the evening and taking questions from audience members and a CNN moderator. The town hall, which HRC bills as the "Power of our Pride," will air exclusively on the CNN television and digital platforms and coincides with the 31st anniversary of National Coming Out Day on October 11. Invitations to participate in the LGBTQ-focused town hall were extended to Democratic presidential hopefuls who met the DNC's qualifications for the October 2019 primary debate. The polls for this town hall must have been released between June 28, 2019 and September 25, 2019.
October Democratic debate to take place on one night
Copyright 2019 CNN(CNN) - The CNN/New York Times Democratic presidential debate in October will occur on one night, the Democratic National Committee told campaigns Friday. The party's most recent debate in September featured 10 candidates debating on a single night. "Our goal has always been to expand viewership, and we also believe that one night worked well for this last debate," said the official, speaking on background. This is the second DNC-sanctioned debate CNN will broadcast in 2019. The debate will air exclusively on CNN, CNN International, CNN en Espaol, and stream on CNN.com's homepage and NYTimes.com's homepage.
Poll: Warren surges, Biden fades in close Iowa race
Although neither candidate holds a clear lead at this point, the new poll finds Warren and Biden well ahead of other contenders for the Democratic nomination. The poll marks Gabbard's third qualifying poll for inclusion in October's Democratic debates. All told, 71% are at least considering Warren's candidacy, ahead of the next best candidate on that score by 11 points (Biden at 60%). And Warren's supporters are a bit less apt to be locked in than are those backing Biden (12% of Warren supporters say their mind is made up vs. 26% of Biden's supporters). The poll sought to gain insight into what it is likely caucusgoers think an electable candidate would be.
Andrew Yang still says SNL should not have fired comedian
(CNN) - Presidential candidate Andrew Yang still believes comedian Shane Gillis should not have lost his job on "Saturday Night Live," telling CNN's Van Jones, "We're all human, and we can forgive." But Yang, who's Taiwanese-American, has consistently said he did not believe Gillis should lose the gig. In an episode of CNN's The Van Jones Show, slated to air at 7 p.m. Yang told Jones that his first reaction to the news about Gillis was "hostility, confusion, anger." ..."If anyone should be offended, it's me," Yang told Jones.
Yang brings own experience to bigoted comments by new 'SNL' member
Yang, who is Taiwanese-American, told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" Sunday that racial epithets hurt and should be taken seriously, but also softened his criticism, saying Gillis' comments "should be taken differently" because he is a comedian. "And I do think Anti-Asian racial epithets are not taken as seriously as slurs against other groups. Yang's own jokesYang himself is a complicated figure to highlight the racist comments. The joke was criticized by some on social media and Asian American commentators accused Yang of leaning on the "model minority" Asian stereotype. When asked Sunday about the candidate's own jokes referencing Asian stereotypes, Yang characterized his comments as merely "poking fun" at such stereotypes to urge Americans to reflect on them.
Yang wades into backlash over new 'SNL' cast member's comments
The tweet prompted a response from Sen. Elizabeth Warren's campaign manager, Roger Lau, the first Asian American in the role for a major presidential candidate. The SNL controversy started just hours after NBC announced Thursday the hiring of Gillis as one of three new cast members. One of those three new members was Bowen Yang, the first full-time cast member of East Asian descent. About an hour after offering to meet with Gillis, Yang followed up with a second tweet saying he didn't think Gillis should lose his just-announced job. The joke landed like a thud with some on social media, with Asian American commentators accusing Yang of leaning on the "model minority" Asian stereotype.
CNN, New York Times to co-host next Democratic presidential debate

Harris says she admires Yang's cash giveaway plan
(CNN) - Sen. Kamala Harris said Friday she admires Andrew Yang's expanded "Freedom Dividends" proposal after appearing to chuckle at the suggestion during Thursday night's debate. During Thursday night's Democratic debate, Harris appeared to chuckle after businessman Andrew Yang announced that his campaign would give $1,000 a month to 10 deserving families. Yang's proposal, which he calls the "Freedom Dividends," is a model of his Universal Basic Income campaign platform. Yang is currently making monthly "Freedom Dividends" payments to three families in Iowa, New Hampshire and Florida, according to his campaign. In a statement, Yang's campaign aides said they had consulted with their lawyers, who say the "Freedom Dividends are fully compliant with all FEC regulations."
Andrew Yang says he'll give 10 more people $1,000 a month for a year
HOUSTON (CNN) - Andrew Yang announced Thursday that his presidential campaign will give 10 people $1,000 a month for a year in an expansion of his signature "universal basic income" policy platform. Yang announced during the third Democratic presidential debate on ABC News that he will raffle off 10 "Freedom Dividends" that will be financed by campaign donations from supporters. His campaign says Yang is already personally financing the "Freedom Dividends" for three people in Iowa, New Hampshire and Florida. The businessman has argued that a universal basic income for all Americans older than 18 would play a key role in making the modern economy more equitable. After Yang finished speaking, the camera cut to South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg for his opening remarks.
6 things to watch for during Democratic debate
Democratic presidential candidates Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg are shown on television monitors in the press room of the Democratic Presidential Debate at the Fox Theatre July 30, 2019, in Detroit. Thursday will be the first time they'll share a debate stage -- a reality that could offer Democratic voters a stark view of the contrasts in how the two approach politics. This is exactly the debate we want to have," Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir said. And headed into the third debate, Harris' campaign is suggesting the risk isn't worth repeating. But it looks like an 11th, billionaire investor and Democratic activist Tom Steyer, will meet the Democratic National Committee's qualifying threshold for the October round.
Poll: Biden continues to lead pack in 2020 race
There hasn't been a significant change in the race since Quinnipiac's last poll earlier in August. Wednesday is the last day to qualify for the September debate stage, and no candidates qualified because of this poll. Almost two in five (38%) said they would support Trump. All other Democratic presidential candidates who got above 1% in the Quinnipiac poll also bested Trump. Trump's approval remains steady: 38% of registered voters approve of the job he's doing compared to 56% who disapprove.
Here's who has qualified for the September debates so far
(CNN) - The third round of Democratic primary debates, hosted by ABC and Univision, will take place the second week of September. Presidential candidates have until late August to reach polling and grassroots fundraising thresholds set by the Democratic National Committee. Candidates must receive contributions from at least 130,000 individuals, coming from at least 400 unique donors in 20 or more states. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, billionaire Tom Steyer and author Marianne Williamson have reached the fundraising threshold, but still need to hit their polling minimum to qualify. Steyer has received three of his four necessary polls, Gabbard has two and Williamson has one.
