ROANOKE, Va. – The countdown is on until you can get your hands on a sweet treat.
The 42nd Annual Community School Strawberry Festival returns to Roanoke on Friday, May 6.
On Thursday, volunteers cleaned and sliced nearly 3,500 pounds of strawberries.
This year’s festival is the first time back at Elmwood Park since the pandemic. Organizers said it wouldn’t be possible without volunteers and parents.
It takes 250 volunteer shifts to get everything ready.
“It’s not a mass-produced thing. We are doing it by hand, even after all of these years,” said Melanie Oldham, one of the Strawberry Festival coordinators.
The festival begins at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 6 and runs through Saturday, May 7.
