IRONMAN cyclist hit by vehicle during race, driver charged

Police say the driver went around safety cones to turn onto a side road

VINTON, Va. – An IRONMAN triathlon athlete was hit during the cycling portion of the race in Vinton over the weekend, according to the Vinton Police Department.

We’re told the incident happened when a vehicle traveling westbound on Washington Avenue went around the traffic safety cones and into the cyclist course.

Police say the driver went around the cones in order to turn onto a side road, and when they did, the cyclist hit the vehicle.

Authorities said rescue personnel took the cyclist to the hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle has been charged, according to Vinton police.
