Mother's Day can bring mental health challenges

While it’s a day of celebration for some, others, not so much

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Mother’s Day is Sunday — and while it’s a day of celebration for some, others, not so much.

Experts say those who have lost their mother or child often have a hard time on Mother’s Day, as well as those who may have a strained, or nonexistent relationship with their mom.

They said these feelings are completely valid, and it’s important to take time to process them.

“Set healthy boundaries, and too, acknowledge while this holiday may be super awesome for many of my friends and colleagues and family, it’s tough for me - and that’s okay. It’s okay that things are upsetting to you, and recognizing it is the more important part,” Regional Clinic Director for Thriveworks Lynchburg Geralyn Fortney, LPC said.

Fortney said women struggling with infertility often deal with these emotions as well.

If you have a friend or family member who struggles on Mother’s Day, let them, she said to follow their lead on how to spend the day.
