Roanoke City teacher receives national education award

ROANOKE, Va – A local high school teacher has been given a presidential award for excellence in mathematics and science teaching.

Raymond Cotter is an engineering teacher at DAYTEC in Roanoke. He is one of only six teachers statewide to receive this award.

Cotter has been with Roanoke City Schools for nearly 20 years and teaches students how to connect engineering to real-world concepts.

“So I’ve worked to get the input from a lot of local engineers to make sure that what I’m teaching is what they do day to day,” said Cotter. “So, seeing this recognized at that level really helps me know that I’m going in the right direction with things.”

Part of his class involves robot competitions, where students have to design, program and build their own robots.
