ROANOKE – You can start applying for the Virginia Western Community College Access Program. Roanoke Valley high school graduates can get up to three years of free college.  The CCAP application period closes in February. There are monthly meetings to explain the process. The following meetings will be held in Whitman Theater on the campus of Virginia Western, 3095 Colonial Ave., in Roanoke.
· Oct. 10, 2017:  6:30 to 8 p.m.
· Nov. 14, 2017:  6:30 to 8 p.m.
· Dec. 7, 2017: 6:30 to 8 p.m.
· Jan. 18, 2017:  6:30 to 8 p.m.
· Feb. 6, 2017:  6:30 to 8 p.m.

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg begins taking applications for Angel Tree gift assistance. You can apply in person at the Community Center on Park Avenue. Bring ID, proof of income and proof of expenses. Sign-ups will take place the first two weeks of Oct., Mon. through Fri., 9 am -12 pm and 1 pm -3 pm daily. Drive-thru flu shots start at the Salem VA Medical Center and Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Vaccines will be given by experienced nursing staff in front of Building 1 in Salem. Veterans must be enrolled in the VA system to receive the vaccine.

Virginia Farm to School Week starts today. The Virginia Department of Education is encouraging schools, businesses and community members across the commonwealth to celebrate. The farm-to-school program helps connect schools with local food producers to purchase fresh, healthy food items for availability in school cafeterias and at early childhood education centers. Schools are celebrating in unique ways including produce tastings and third graders getting $10 to purchase fresh produce during their visit to a local farmer's market.
