VINTON, Va. – An estimated 2.1 million dollar project is underway at William Byrd high school. Construction is underway to install a new turf field at their main sports stadium. They are also installing a new 6-lane rubberized track that will host the VHSL 4A regional in 2018. In addition, they are upgrading the practice fields with Bermuda grass along with adding lights to the practice fields.
"You know I think everyone's excited specially with the high school and the middle school because I've been here for three years spring and fall were sharing the field. We have not been able to really maintain it to get it to where the playing surface is perfect for the kids, so hopefully this is going to solve some of those issues for us," says William Byrd athletic director Jason Taylor.
Turf installation is expected to begin in June, with the track to follow soon after. The construction is expected to be finished before the first football game in August.
