Virginia officials urge backyard bird owners to strengthen biosecurity as wild waterfowl migration resumes this fall, amid concerns over Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

Cases of avian flu affecting cattle first started in Texas in late March after cows started showing some unusual symptoms, and after running some tests, veterinarians found the cattle were infected with avian influenza.

A flock of commercial turkeys in Rockingham County, Virginia has tested positive for the highly pathogenic avian influenza, according to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Resources.
