As economic worry grows, Democrats face weary Vegas voters

Democrats are trying to convince voters that their response to the pandemic paved the way for a more stable economy, particularly in a tourism-dependent city such as Las Vegas. But the apathy of voters, some of whom fault Democrats for not controlling inflation, endangers the slim Democratic control of the House. They’re not top of mind and thinking, ‘Oh, I got to go vote,’” said Horsford, who represents North Las Vegas. To get people to the polls, Democrats are telling anxious voters that they spearheaded the employment recovery over the past year. But not all Hispanic voters, who make up almost 30 percent of the Nevada electorate, are enthusiastic Democrats like Acosta.

Democrats hope unconventional travelogue entices viewers

(Democratic National Convention via AP)NEW YORK An unexpected travelogue connected as a television event during the second night of the Democrats' virtual convention, livening up a show that so far is struggling in the ratings. Four years ago, opening night drew just under 26 million viewers. NBC's telecast drew 2.28 million viewers, down from 4.29 million four years ago, Nielsen said. The left-leaning MSNBC, where Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid and Nicolle Wallace were anchors, led the way Monday with 5.1 million viewers, up from four years ago. Fox News Channel's audience was unimpressed; the 2.1 million viewers it reached for its hour of convention coverage compared poorly with the 3.4 million viewers that time slot occupant Laura Ingraham had on an average July day.

Nevada delegation wants statue of late senator replaced

The delegation members' letters also voiced support for local efforts to rename Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport. Two of the letter-signers were among delegation members who asked state lawmakers in 2017 to remove the McCarran statue from the Capitol. To replace the statue in the U.S. Capitol, the state Legislature must pass a resolution identifying the statue to be replaced along with the name of a replacement, and several other requirements. Each state is invited to place two statues in the National Statuary Hall Collection. Nevada added its second honoree in 2005 with a statue of 19th century Northern Paiute author and educator Sarah Winnemucca.

Push to accelerate mustang captures draws fire in Congress

Two House committee chairmen are trying to put the brakes on money for a new Trump administration proposal to accelerate the capture of 130,000 wild horses across the West over the next 10 years. It's been condemned by the largest mustang protection groups in the West that say it could lead to the extinction of the free-roaming animals. "It's a sweeping betrayal of America's wild herds by the nation's largest animal welfare groups," said Suzanne Roy, executive director of the American Wild Horse Campaign. The animal welfare groups said they're willing to accept the accelerated roundups in some overpopulated areas to stave off the possibility Congress might otherwise resort to dropping current prohibitions on the use of federal money for slaughter. House Interior Chairman Raul Grijalva , D-Arizona, and House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-New York, sent the letter this week to a House-Senate panel of appropriation conferees considering a compromise version.
