(AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth)LONDON โ€“ British lawmakers agreed Thursday to prolong coronavirus emergency measures for six months, allowing the Conservative government to keep its unprecedented powers to restrict U.K. citizensโ€™ everyday lives. The House of Commons voted to extend the powers until September, and approved the government's road map for gradually easing Britain's strict coronavirus lockdown over the next three months. Simon Stevens, chief executive of the National Health Service in England, said Thursday that English hospitals were treating about 4,000 coronavirus patients, down from 34,000 in mid-January. Adโ€œWe must restore the freedoms that we all cherish, but in a way that doesnโ€™t put the (National Health Service) at risk,โ€ he said.

FILE - In this Tuesday Sept. 22, 2020 file photo, members of the public are seen by a public information message in Manchester, England. Mark Walport, a former chief scientific officer, said Britain only needs to look across the English Channel to see whatโ€™s coming. It is โ€œnot unrealisticโ€™โ€™ that 25,000 people in the U.K. could be hospitalized by the end of November โ€” up from about 9,000 now, he said. According to results from a large, ongoing study into the COVID-19 epidemic in England, scientists estimated that there are about 96,000 new cases every day and that the outbreak is doubling in size every nine days. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said the four nations must develop a unified strategy to avoid confusion and deliver a clear message.
