(AP Photo/Alastair Grant)LONDON โ British lawmakers voted Wednesday to renew the governmentโs sweeping powers to impose emergency restrictions to curb the coronavirus pandemic, though many slammed the way Prime Minister Boris Johnsonโs Conservative administration has used them. But there is little lawmakers can do about the government's response because of the powers that Parliament granted the government six months ago in the Coronavirus Act. โThings cannot go on as they are,โ he said, al though he added that Labour would not vote to end the powers. โI wish I could tell you tonight that the impact of this package has already begun to appear, but it will take time to feed through,โ the prime minister said at a televised news conference.

"This House will change, but it will change for the better," Hoyle promised the chamber after his election. Hoyle served as the Deputy Speaker for the past nine years, and beat seven other candidates to attain his new post. In keeping with tradition, Hoyle was physically dragged to the speaker's chair by other lawmakers after the vote. The tradition dates back to the darker ages of British politics, when the speaker acted as a messenger between Parliament and the monarch.
