A bill that would let Texas residents sue out-of-state abortion pill providers for up to $100,000 has been passed by lawmakers and sent to the governor.

A Texas judge has fined a New York doctor for prescribing abortion pills to a woman near Dallas in one of the first challenges in the U.S. to “shield laws” enacted in Democratic-controlled states where abortion is legal.

Lawmakers in some states are pushing measures to crack down on abortion pills or penalize women who obtain abortions.

The battles over abortion in the U.S. are increasingly focusing on the pills that are now the most common way pregnancies are ended.
