How The Chicks dropped the word 'Dixie' from their name

NASHVILLE, Tenn. When The Chicks decided to drop the word Dixie from the band's name, it was the culmination of years of internal discussions and attempts to distance itself from negative connotations with the word. The band signed a seven-record deal with Sony and again, they questioned whether to continue as The Dixie Chicks. Strayer even wondered if the word chicks was too derogatory to women, but ultimately felt it was empowering. I think the sort of now moment for me was when NASCAR banned the Dixie flag, said Maines. The Chicks did some research and found a female duo in New Zealand had been using the name The Chicks for decades.

Dixie Chicks drop 'dixie' from name, now known as The Chicks

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Grammy-winning country group The Dixie Chicks have dropped the word dixie from their name, now going by The Chicks. A sincere and heartfelt thank you goes out to The Chicks of NZ for their gracious gesture in allowing us to share their name. We are honored to co-exist together in the world with these exceptionally talented sisters, the band said in a statement. The move follows a decision by country group Lady Antebellum to change to Lady A after acknowledging the word's association to slavery. Lady A received criticism with their name switch after a Black singer revealed shed been performing as Lady A for years.

Dixie Chicks are finally back with a new song

If you look up the definition of “gaslight” in the dictionary, it will tell you “to cause a person to doubt his or her sanity through the use of psychological manipulation,” and that’s what the Dixie Chicks’ new song, “Gaslighter," is exactly about. It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 14 years since we’ve been blessed with a new album from these country queens, and it seems like they’re picking up right where they left off after the success of their hit song “Not Ready To Make Nice.”The Dixie Chicks have never been afraid to say what they think. Who can forget when they made those comments about President George W. Bush? The Dixie Chicks don’t hold anything back, and Maines has never sounded better ripping through the verses of the song. The album “Gaslighter” officially drops May 1, and until then, you can play the song “Gaslighter” over and over and over again.

Dixie Chicks announce first new album in 13 years

Getty Images(CNN) - The Dixie Chicks are ready to give their fans what they've been waiting for -- some new music! The short video featured Maines saying, "Dixie Chicks!" It's been 13 years since the country group released an album, "Taking the Long Way," which won a Grammy for album of the year. The Dixie Chicks first came on to the scene in the early '90s in Dallas and achieved commercial success in 1998 with their hit songs "There's Your Trouble" and "Wide Open Spaces." "The Dixie Chicks were making such interesting music and doing it in such an unapologetically feminine, imaginative way," Swift told the magazine.
