Bus-size asteroid to zoom by Earth, ducking below satellites
Read full article: Bus-size asteroid to zoom by Earth, ducking below satellitesCAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. โ An asteroid the size of a school bus is headed our way, but NASA says the space rock will zoom safely past Earth on Thursday. The newly discovered asteroid will come within 13,000 miles (22,000 kilometers) of Earth, well below many of the communications satellites orbiting the planet, scientists said this week. Scientists estimate the asteroid is between 15 feet and 30 feet (4.5 meters to 9 meters). Asteroid 2020 SW, as it is known, was discovered last Friday by the Catalina Sky Survey at the University of Arizona in Tucson. ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Instituteโs Department of Science Education.

School bus-size asteroid to make close, but safe, pass by Earth Thursday
Read full article: School bus-size asteroid to make close, but safe, pass by Earth ThursdayWhen I first read about Asteroid 2020 SW making a close pass by Earth, I decided to check with Tony Rice . Heโs an ambassador to NASAโs Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and we rely on him most often for space-related news. Rice replied with information from NASAโs JPL that confirms an asteroid (15 to 30 feet wide) will make a โcloseโ pass by Earth Thursday morning. These satellites orbit the earth at roughly 20,000 miles away. After its close pass over the Pacific Ocean, the asteroid will continue its orbit around the sun only to return near Earth (not as close) in 2041.
