The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs hockey team, which plays its home games at the Berglund Center, announced Tuesday it would not participate in the upcoming Southern Professional Hockey League season. Berglund Center general manager Robyn Schon said the Rail Yard Dawgs' decision did not take her by surprise. More than 125 part-time Berglund Center employees would have worked during Rail Yard Dawgs games, which does not include parking or security staff. Schon said the capacity limit has also stalled plans to bring music and other entertainment back to the Berglund Center.

The organization made the announcement Tuesday, citing the “ongoing COVID-19 conditions that impact statewide restrictions on mass gatherings and events.”“Today is a tough day for the team,” said Rail Yard Dawgs President Mickey Gray. Robyn Schon, general manager of the Berglund Center, hopes fans continue to support the Rail Yard Dawgs. “We regret that we won’t see our beloved Dawgs hit the ice this season, but we understand the challenges and stand behind the organization’s decision. Along with the Rail Yard Dawgs, the Quad City Storm, Peoria Rivermen, Evansville Thunderbolts and Fayetteville Marksmen have opted out.

Berglund Center reopens for first event since March

Berglund Center General Manager Robyn Schon described the event is a test run for her staff. Mandatory temperature checks and masks are required for anyone who enters the Berglund Center. The Berglund Center will start hosting small-scale events throughout the summer, but does not anticipate any live performances in the near future. The LFA Consignment Event ends Sunday.
