When officers got on the scene, the woman told them that her son had locked himself in a hotel room and was destroying property. Police made contact but said Matthew A. Welch refused to open the door and began setting fire to items inside. Salem Fire and EMS responded to the hotel and put out the fire. The Fire Marshal estimated $2,000 worth of damage inside the hotel room.

Earlier this month, neighbors one street over on Dalewood Avenue say shots were fired at their home overnight. According to the Salem Police Department, officers have been working with the current property owner over the past year to address these ongoing incidents. Anyone with information is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 540-375-3083. Neighbors on scene say they witnessed a car drive by firing a half a dozen shots at a house before speeding away.
