(Steve White via AP)NEW YORK – The co-owner of a New York City bar that authorities said has been defying coronavirus restrictions was taken into custody early Sunday after running over a deputy with a car, authorities said. Danny Presti tried to drive away from his bar, Mac's Public House, as deputies were arresting him for serving patrons in violation of city and state closure orders, Sheriff Joseph Fucito said. Deputies attempted to arrest Presti as he left the bar early Sunday, but Presti got into his car, struck a deputy and kept driving for about 100 yards as the deputy was left hanging onto the hood, Fucito said. The injured deputy was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries. Authorities said the bar was still serving patrons Saturday night even though it was ordered closed entirely after Presti's earlier arrest.

NEW YORK – A German shepherd that was the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in a dog in the United States has died in New York. The Staten Island family that owned Buddy tells National Geographic that the 7-year-old shepherd developed breathing problems in mid-April after a family member had been sick with COVID-19. A veterinarian tested Buddy in May and found him positive for the virus. The dog was euthanized on July 11 after his health had severely declined. It’s unknown if the coronavirus played a role in his illness.

Audrey Lorber is accused of transporting cannabis into Russia. (CNN) - A New York woman has been arrested in Russia on suspicion of possessing marijuana that she said was for medicinal purposes, Russian courts told CNN on Tuesday. Lorber had a US permit to use marijuana as part of a medical program, but the permit doesn't apply in Russian territory, Lebedeva said. It wasn't immediately clear when the arrest happened, or what medical condition Lorber has. The US State Department told CNN on Monday it was aware of reports that a US citizen was arrested in St. Petersburg.

Eric Garner died in 2014 after police attempted to arrest the 43-year-old father of six for allegedly selling cigarettes illegally in Staten Island. (CNN) - Protesters rallied in New York Wednesday on the anniversary of the death of Eric Garner, an African American father who died after officers tried to apprehend him five years ago. Protesters demanded justice for Garner's death and called for Pantaleo and other officers to be fired, directing anger at New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. In a cell phone video, Pantaleo appeared to have Garner in a chokehold shortly before Garner died. The city's medical examiner's office ruled Garner's death a homicide in the days after his death.
