After seeing his mother and two brothers die, Devin walked about 14 miles to La Mora and relayed the "first news anyone had heard" of the attack, Miller said. Relatives and Mexican soldiers found the girl after searching the area for about two hours, Miller said.

(CNN) - Nine women and children from a Mormon community in Mexico were killed while traveling near the US-Mexico border on Monday, according to Mexico's security minister. Seven children injured in the attack were flown from Mexico to Douglas, Arizona, for transport to Tucson hospitals, LeBaron said. The victims are part of a Mormon community of about 3,000 members living in Mexico. Generally, the community practices a fundamentalist version of Mormonism, and one of the victim's family members told CNN that some practice polygamy. The LeBaron family has been the victim of drug cartel violence in Mexico.

'They were driving together for safety reasons'In each of the three cars attacked, a mother was driving children to see family. "They were driving together for safety reasons," said Kendra Lee Miller, whose sister-in-law Rhonita Maria Miller was killed in the attack. In a second car, 43-year-old Dawna Ray Langford was driving, Kendra Miller said. All they found was charred remains, ash and bones," Kendra Miller said. Family members describe themselves as part of a Mormon community of about 3,000 members, living in their own agricultural community in Mexico.

DONNA, Texas (CNN) - Construction began last week on the first new miles of barrier along the US-Mexico border since President Donald Trump took office, according to two Customs and Border Patrol officials familiar with the project. Customs and Border Protection, along with the Army Corps of Engineers, began installing panels for the new border wall in the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas last week, according to the agency. Construction of the 30-foot-tall barrier is taking place in the Rio Grande Valley south of Donna, according to the other Customs and Border Protection official. At the end of September, the total length of primary barrier along the Southwest border was about 654 miles. Last month, acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan touted the agency's wall construction in an interview on Fox Business.

(CNN) - Border Patrol arrests on the US-Mexico border continued to drop in September, marking a steady decline since the high earlier this spring when Trump administration officials struggled to stem the flow of migrants attempting to enter the US. There were nearly 40,000 arrests on the southern border in September, which was the lowest month this fiscal year, according to a source familiar with the data. Apprehensions along the southern border were higher in fiscal year 2019 than in any fiscal year since 2007, with slightly more than 850,000 arrests, according to Border Patrol data. Border Patrol apprehensions, which are used as a measure of illegal crossings, are particularly important to President Donald Trump, who views them as a barometer of the situation along the southern border, according to administration officials. Customs and Border Protection, which oversees US Border Patrol, does not comment on unofficial numbers.

The policies are part of a concerted effort by the administration to tighten asylum and curb migration to the US-Mexico border. In February, a coalition of immigrant advocacy groups asked a federal judge for a restraining order that would block the policy. Trump shouted during the meeting, adding in a profanity, multiple officials in the room told the Times. Kushner and other West Wing officials emailed Trump about Mexico's increased apprehensions of migrants before they could reach the US, according to the paper. Miller told Trump that advisers continually citing legal constraints, such as Nielsen, were part of the problem and that the administration should instead focus on rejecting migrants at the border, The Times reported. By the middle of the week, Trump appeared to have abandoned the idea and floated to Nielsen the option of imposing tariffs, the paper reported.

A mother and her toddler from Honduras drowned while attempting to cross the Rio Grande from Mexico into Texas, authorities said. The Honduran mother died with her son, 21-month-old son, Iker Gael Cordova Herrera, while trying to cross the Rio Grande river into Texas, Nelly Jerez, the Honduran vice foreign minister of consular and migration affairs, said in a statement obtained by CNN. Jerez said the pair had recently entered the US and made a request for asylum but they were sent to Matamoros, Mexico, to wait for an immigration court hearing. Last week, Herrera Hernandez told her husband that she felt scared and nervous about crossing the Rio Grande. Earlier this year, a 23-month-old girl from El Salvador and her father drowned crossing the Rio Grande near Matamoros.

(CNN) - Preliminary data indicates that US Border Patrol arrested around 51,000 people on the US-Mexico border in August, according to a Border Patrol source familiar with the data. Border Patrol apprehensions, a measure of illegal crossings, dropped around 30% from 71,999 in July to around 51,000 in August, according to the preliminary data. Many migrants arriving at the southern border turn themselves into Border Patrol after arriving on US soil. Customs and Border Protection, which releases monthly border arrest numbers, does not comment on preliminary data.

"The Trump administration is trying to unilaterally reverse our country's legal and moral commitment to protect those fleeing danger.
