Roanoke Sheriff's Office warns of phone scam involving jury duty

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The Roanoke Sheriff's Office says people should be on the look-out for a telephone scam involving jury duty. 

They say they received reports from people who have been contacted by scammers claiming to be deputy sheriffs.

The scammers say the potential victim has failed to comply with jury subpoenas, or have missed a court date, and are subject to fines or arrest. 

Some potential victims have been asked to bring their driver's license and social security card and report in person to the Sheriff's Office after normal business hours to meet with deputies and pay fines. 

The scammers are using telephone technology to make it appear that the calls are originating from a Sheriff's Office telephone number. 

The Sheriff's Office warns that this is a scam. It does not solicit payments from individuals in this way. 

Deputies ask anyone with questions regarding jury service int he City of Roanoke to contact the Sheriff's Office at (540) 853-5884. 

If you receive this type of fraudulent call, you're asked to notify your local law enforcement agency immediately.
