STAUNTON (WSLS 10) - All northbound lanes on Interstate 81 reopened Monday evening after repairs at a sinkhole site at mile marker 284 in Shenandoah County closed the road to traffic. 

VDOT said the Virginia State Police performed a slow roll for traffic on I-81 to help clear out the traffic backups around 2:45 p.m. It also said motorists should expect significant traffic delays in the area as traffic clears from extensive backups. Backups up to 13 miles have been reported in the area at various times.

VDOT announced early Monday all northbound lanes along Interstate-81 were closed to allow crews to repair the sinkhole.

A detour was set up taking traffic off of I-81 at exit 277 near Bowmans Crossing, traveling onto Route 614 eastbound to Route 11 northbound to Route 651 westbound and back on I-81 at exit 291 in the Toms Brook area.

On I-81 North at mile marker 284 in the County of Shenandoah, motorists can expect major delays due to a sinkhole. Traffic backups are approximately 4.0 miles.
