PULASKI COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Virginia State Police are investigating a motorcycle accident that killed a 21-year-old man from Virginia Beach.

The crash happened at 12:22 p.m. Thursday, August 13 along Interstate-81 northbound at mile marker 92.6 in Pulaski County.

According to state police, a 2014 Harley Davidson "V-Rod" motorcycle was traveling northbound on I-81 when it ran off the left side of the roadway and struck the guardrail.

Once the motorcycle struck the guardrail, police say it went airborne and flipped over at least once.

The driver, identified as George Pereyra, 21, of Virginia Beach, was ejected following the initial impact, and suffered a fatal head injury. Troopers say the motorcycle, after the initial impact with the guardrail, ran back across the highway and off the right side of the roadway where it struck the guardrail located off the right side of the highway.

State police say Pereyra was an active duty member of the United States Navy. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The driver of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet, however the impact with the guardrail was very violent, and when the impact occurred the driver was ejected into the air before coming down on the guardrail where his head impacted one of the guardrail post. Based on witness statements, our initial investigation seems to point towards the driver falling asleep," said First Sergeant Mike Honaker of the Virginia State Police.

Trooper Adam Bedsaul is the lead investigator of the crash investigation. He is being assisted by the Virginia State Police, Division IV Crash Reconstruction Team.
