Lanes reopen after tractor-trailer fire closes I-81N for nearly 7 hours

MONTGOMERY COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Interstate-81 in Montgomery County has fully reopened following a tractor trailer fire early Friday.

Virginia State Police said they received the call around 5 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4. of a vehicle fire along I-81 northbound at mile marker 122 - towards Shawsville.

They said the tractor trailer was carrying other vehicles.

State police told WSLS 10 it was going to take awhile for crews to extinguish the fire and clear the scene. VDOT remained on scene to salt the road.

Witnesses said the fire "melted" many of the vehicles on the back of the trailer - and the area "smelled of burnt rubber."

No injuries were reported.
